Waterloo Counseling Center offers a number of therapeutic opportunities to eligible clients. Our individualized care begins with the initial phone call to an intake specialist.
In serving a community of gender and sexual diversity, Waterloo specializes in a number of life issues and concerns. This includes, but is not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning experiences (LGBTIQ).
Counseling issues may include:
- coming out issues
- trauma related to hate crimes and social mistreatment
- survival of abuse
- HIV related issues including diagnosis and long term adjustments
- transsexual/transgender counseling, including diagnosis and assessment for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and sexual reassignment surgery (SRS)
- depression and stress
- panic and anxiety
- spiritual journeys and existential explorations
- a variety of familial and relationship structures and experiences
Our staff works from a variety of theoretical orientations and treatment techniques. These include:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Feminist Theory and Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT)
- Spiritual and Energy-based work
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Art and Play Therapy, including Sandtray Therapy
- Family Systems Therapy

- Gay and Bisexual Men's Psychotherapy Groups:
Long term group for men only.
Mondays 6:00
- Men's Coming-Out Support Group:
Tuesdays 7:00
- Women's Coming-Out Group:
Tuesdays 5:00-6:30
The following groups may be formed based on demand by interested participants.
- Women's Psychotherapy Group: A long-term group for women only.
- Substance Abuse Psychotherapy Group for Adults
- Genderqueer Group
